Netflix plans to establish its own video game studio

According to Amir Rahimi, vice president of Netflix's gaming division, The popular streaming platform will soon have its own game studio. Marko Lastikka, former vice president and CEO of Zynga, the company responsible for creating FarmVille, will be CEO of the new company, which will be based in Helsinki, the capital of Finland.

This supposes a important advance for the platform, which in November 2021 began offering mobile games (iOS and Android) to its subscribers at no additional cost. With the help of the new studio, the company will be able to develop "quality original games" that do not contain advertising or micropayments.

Netflix will have 4 video game studios

This will be Netflix's first video game studio, built from scratch. Until now, the company had only acquired pre-existing studios, such as Next Games (also located in Finland), Boss Fight Entertainment and Oxenfree Night School Studio. This means that the leading video on demand service will have a total of four video game studios under your control.

In an official statement, Rahimi stated: “It is still very early, and there is a lot of work to be done before we can deliver a fantastic gaming experience on Netflix. The development of a video game can take several years, so I am very pleased to see how we are laying the foundations of our game studios in just our first year.”

The multi-million dollar investment that Netflix is making in the video game industry has ambitious objectives behind it. The company announced in 2021 that TikTok y Epic Games (developer of Fortnite and Gears of War, among others), are their main competitors in the market they target. However, so far the platform has not had the expected success, since according to a survey conducted by the analytical company Apptopia, less than 1% percent of Netflix users have tried its games.

Today, the Netflix catalog is made up of almost 30 video games that can be played directly from the platform. The titles span a wide variety of genres, from linear minigames to those with a plot. Just go to the "Games" tab within the Netflix app to enjoy them.
