Cyberpunk 2077 increases its number of active players after the Netflix series

Cyberpunk 2077, developed by CD Projekt Red and released almost 2 years ago, continues to be a fairly popular video game, which is largely due to the fact that its developers have not stopped releasing new content and updates. The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners series, released recently on Netflix, has also contributed to increasing the total number of active players of the game.

A few weeks ago, the number of simultaneous players of Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam was greater than 37.000, which was a new record for the game. The previous maximum was 16.000, a figure that was reached in August. This month, however, the title managed to exceed 68 thousand active users, which was a new record.

How similar is the Netflix series to the original game?

Night City, one of the locations of the game universe, serves as the setting for the anime Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners, produced by Netflix in collaboration with Studio Trigger (responsible for hits like Kill la Kill). Although we cannot see any of the game's characters in this production, we are presented with a fascinating narrative. This time, the bar has been raised even higher by Netflix, which has already proven capable of producing a good adaptation of a video game with Arcane.

Mentioning the number of active users of Cyberpunk 2077 is not enough to explain the interest generated by the anime and the latest updates to the game. Games of the caliber of Elden Ring and FIFA 22 do not currently have that number of active players on Steam.

Obviously, it is not correct to determine the overall popularity of Cyberpunk 2077 based solely on the number of PC players, since doing so would not be taking into account the people who purchased the title on consoles. After the latest update, several bug fixes, gameplay improvements, and additional features have made the game attractive again to people who haven't played it for weeks or even months.
