Dozens of bettors in Spain come together to create an association

This month the Spanish Association of Sports Betting Players was born, a group of consumers that will work for a more responsible and safe, fair and informed game.

The AEJAD (by its acronym) aspires to become the first national private entity that represents all sports betting users, protecting them from the abuses of sports betting houses and defending their rights and legitimate interests as consumers.

The ultimate objective is that both legislators and the entity that regulates and controls the sector in Spain, the General Directorate of Gambling Regulation (DGOJ), take into consideration the point of view of sports betting users; Well, the truth is that, until today, bettors did not have any representation in the business in Spain.

Something that does not happen with the Spanish betting houses operating online, which are brought together through the Spanish Digital Gaming Association, an entity that is responsible for ensuring the interests of gaming operators that operate legally in Spain. In addition, there is specialized press in the sector and gaming fairs are organized every year.

Manifesto and founding pillars of the association

In the Manifesto with which AEJAD has made itself known, it is stated that “we want to serve as a lever to transmit, to the press and the rest of society, a healthy image of an activity as stigmatized as sports betting but which, for us, has value both as a recreational activity and as a possible and legal way of obtain profitability"

AEJAD was born based on four fundamental pillars:

  • That players are informed about the risks of betting
  • That the game is fair and current legislation is complied with
  • That the game is carried out responsibly; and prevent bad habits, fraud or illegal conduct.
  • May the game be safe

The origins of the association actually date back to January 2021, when they opened an account on the Twitter network and began to disseminate content linked to sports betting. However, it was not until last month that they obtained their administrative and institutional name, AEJAD.

Protect the player against the ineffectiveness of the administration

In his manifest, AEJAD also requests the DGOJ to “protect users not only against illegal gambling, fraud and gambling addiction; but also against the abuse of privileged position that betting houses currently hold, which impose, without the possibility of negotiation on the part of the user, the terms and conditions of the gaming contracts."

The association will also be responsible for training, informing and educating sports betting users regarding possible risks. As they have stated, “it has already been demonstrated that the administration. public, which should protect us as consumers, does nothing and directs users to legal action in case of any conflict with the betting house.”

Finally, they wanted to express a complaint about the fact that “the public administration considers that these abuses exceed its competence, the betting contract being a private relationship between the user and the betting house.”
