Dr. Spot, the robot that comes into contact with covid-19 patients

Scientists created Spot, a Boston Dynamics robot to help doctors monitor COVID-19 patients without the need to expose themselves.

Dr. Spot is equipped with cameras to measure non-contact vital signs and a tablet for video conferencing.

The Creation of Dr. Spot

Boston Dynamics is a company that has been characterized by the creation and manipulation of different robots, including a dog robot

Named Dr. Spot, this new robotic version is the result of a collaboration between Boston Dynamics, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Specifications

Dr. Spot, is a robot adapted to help doctors treat coronavirus patients. This is an improved version of Spot (an older version of what is now known as Dr. Spot), which had proven to be able to evolve in many environments, making it an ideal candidate to intervene in a hospital.

Therefore, the researchers equipped it with cameras so that doctors can monitor the condition of patients without contact. It is also covered with a tablet, to allow doctors to speak directly with patients.

In general, this robot prevents staff from being exposed to the virus, reducing the use of protective equipment.

Features

In order to measure patients' vital signs without touching them, Dr. Spot is equipped with an infrared camera and three monochrome cameras with optical filters for wavelengths of 660, 810 and 880 nanometers.

Thanks to this device, called VitalCam, the robot can measure temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate and pulsed oxygen saturation (SpO2).

To date, Boston Dynamics Company continues its work on quadrupedal robots, with supposedly civil or military uses.
