The electric scooter with removable roof from BMW

Launched at the beginning of the new millennium, the BMW C1 scooter looked like a UFO with its roof and seat belt system, which allowed users to ride it without a helmet.

However, the concept was not a great commercial success; but it is evident that the German manufacturer did not give up on the idea. As a result, a series of patents (1, 2, 3, 4) filed in 2019 at the European Patent Office and recently published, suggest that C1 could have a successor in an electric version.

Model Description

The description seems to indicate that the basis of this project could be the evolution of the BMW C, the brand's electric scooter launched in 2014.

The model is said to feature a four-point seat belt system with pretensioners to enroll the driver within the safety cell. Also, it will have side airbags to protect the user from the hips to the shoulders and bend their arms inside the cabin.

Computer controlled stabilizer fins

A new functionality that could be found in this new patent is found in the vehicle seat.

The seat back will be reinforced and equipped with padded sections that act as shock absorbers in the event of an impact to the rear.

BMW even went so far as to provide a computer-controlled stabilization system, with side fins whose tilt varies with the wind. This is in order to create more support and prevent the scooter from being unbalanced, either due to a bad maneuver or due to an obstacle on the road.

Ceiling

One of the most attractive elements is the roof, which will be easily removable, allowing the rider to switch to an "uncoverable" version of the electric scooter, if circumstances allow.

Let's hope this is an improved and innovative concept of the BMW C1.
