GivePower installs a solar desalination plant in Kenya

The lack of drinking water in some countries is a serious problem that gives rise to poverty that is impossible to eradicate, so there are companies that carry out solidarity projects such as GivePower, which installs a solar desalination plant in Kenya, thanks to which, a good number of citizens will be able to benefit from fresh and free drinking water.

Water shortage in Kenya

Africa is a very rich country in many aspects, but it has a serious problem with water, since there are areas where drinking water is scarce or directly inaccessible.

Many of these areas are populated, but due to the lack of water, it is really difficult to grow crops or even carry out daily tasks that go unnoticed by everyone, such as showering, washing dishes or even drinking a little fresh water when it is hot.

Furthermore, when it is achieved find water For example, in a well, it is often contaminated, so purification can also be another inconvenience since it requires a good investment.

According to Unicef and the WHO, it is estimated that on the entire planet only two-thirds have access to drinking water, a situation that worsens year after year, to the point that it is considered that by 2025, half of the population will be occupying areas where water stress will be suffered.

GivePower makes water drinkable in Kenya with a solar desalination plant

GivePower is a non-profit organization that has decided to undertake change, starting its project in Kenya, where it has installed a solar desalination plant, that is, a system through which salt water is obtained, separates the water from the salt, and in this way offers good quality drinking water.

Basically the objective is to convert seawater into drinking water, but GivePower is aware that another of the problems Kenya faces is also energy, so the desolator has been built with the aim of being powered by solar energy, which means that local residents will not have to spend money on energy.

It should be noted that there is already a previous project that was installed in the coastal area of Kiunga in the month of July 2018, which has the capacity to generate up to 75.000 liters of drinking water each day, which means that it can supply up to 25.000 people as long as responsible consumption of water is made.

The goal of GivePower is to open facilities of this type throughout the entire planet, with the aim of helping in those places where water is a luxury good.

Who is GivePower

GivePower is a company that was founded in 2013 by Hayes Barnard from SolarCity, which is in turn a solar panel company that was founded with the help of Elon Musk in 2006.

However, in 2016 SolarCity merged with Tesla, at which time Hayes Barnard decided to separate the projects so that GivePower could continue operating on its own.

Currently, GivePower aims to build solar energy systems that can provide electricity to developing countries, although it is also experimenting with new projects such as desalination.

To give us an idea, GivePower has installed solar networks in more than 2650 areas in 17 countries, highlighting hospitals, schools and even villages.

Without a doubt, it is a very ambitious project that continues its course, and hopes to continue offering solutions to all those places where energy and water are scarce goods.
