Intel Joule, the toughest competition for Raspberry Pi

There is no doubt that the Raspberry Pi is the most popular and characteristic minicomputer that, for many years, has been giving us a lot of joy, especially those of us who like to carry out some small projects in a private way. However, the competition was not long in coming, and soon other models would appear that would try to achieve the characteristics and performance of this system, although the truth is that they always stayed on the edge and never stood out too much. However, now a new model is born that, this time, is going to make things very difficult for the berry brand; his name is IntelJoule and it is a system that will give a lot to talk about in the coming months.

Meet the Intel Joule micro PC

Intel Joule, called SOM by Intel, it is a microcomputer that has come to truly overshadow the similar devices on the market today.

Despite having a much higher price, its characteristics place it far above the latest models from other manufacturers such as Raspberry with its model. Raspberry Pi 3.

This equipment incorporates the small size low consumption chip and the usual plate where the connectors and sensors are incorporated, allowing very varied utilities that can range from virtual reality to its use in drones, robotics and all types of projects that we have in mind.

In fact, it is worth noting that PivotHead has already started using it in its augmented reality glasses, the same glasses that many of you know Airbus uses on its flights.

Of course you can also incorporate RealSense cameras thanks to which movements will be detected, all well managed through an operating system UbuntuLinuxCore.

Features of the Intel Joule

It is important to keep in mind that we will have the possibility to choose between two different models. On the one hand we have the Intel Joule 550x, and on the other the Intel Joule 570x.

As to IntelJoule 550x, we have a 64-bit Intel Atom T5500 processor that incorporates four cores with the speed of 1,5 GHz.

We will have 3 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, Intel HD Graphics with video capture and 4K resolution, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, USB 3.0, various connectors and support for motion capture cameras.

And as for the model IntelJoule 570x, we will have a 64-bit Intel Atom T5700 processor that incorporates four cores with a speed of 1,7 GHz, but offering the possibility of using turbo mode to increase up to 2,4 GHz.

We will have 4 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, the same graphics as in the previous model as well as the same connections, the same operating system and of course it also includes support for Intel RealSense cameras.

Price of Intel Joule models

As for the price, it has not yet been specified, but apparently, the most powerful model, that is, the Intel Joule 570x, would have a starting price of about €250, undoubtedly much more than the competing models, although obviously also with much more outstanding characteristics.
