The Christmas lottery and the Children's Lottery are part of the traditions of the inhabitants of this region. And, therefore, this post is intended to offer as much information as possible about them. Anyone can become a lucky winner of one of the prizes and change their life (in a good way).

What is the Christmas Lottery?

The Extraordinary Christmas Draw, better known as the Christmas Lottery, is one of the most important events of the year in Spain. This is a great raffle that is held in Madrid every December 22. the same rewards 14.008 numbers out of a total of 100.000 sold for each series since 2011.

This lottery is an event that has gained great popularity since It was first celebrated in 1812. In that year, the city of Cádiz was the host of the draw where the number 03604 won the jackpot. At that time, the ticket had a retail value of 40 reais. While the prize was 8000 Pesetas.

The tradition of the Christmas Lottery Draw therefore dates back more than two centuries. However, it was not until December 23, 1892 when it was called by its current name. Plus, I would have to wait another 5 years until it first appeared in print on tickets.

The Christmas Lottery currently It is held at the headquarters of the Teatro Real in Madrid. Previously, it was held for a period of two years in the Palacio de Congresos. However, the scene was quickly changed in order to accommodate a greater number of people and journalists.

This draw is considered the most important event of its kind in the European nation. It represents a staggering 30% of the total revenue billed by the State Lottery and Betting Agency.

What is the Lotería Del Niño?

If the Christmas Lottery is the most important draw of the year in Spain, the Children's Lottery is the second in that order. This event was established as an Extraordinary Draw in 1942 and has been very well received in the community. Annually, it manages to raise around 1000 billion euros. Of that, 70% goes to prizes, while the rest is for administrative expenses and commissions.

It is estimated that the first time the Child's Draw appeared on the scene was in 1877. It would do so with the help of María Del Carmen Hernández, who was Duchess of Santoña. For the moment, the King exempted him from paying the 4% corresponding to taxes. The truth is that it is not known exactly, but it is This is a long-standing event.. However, not as long as the Christmas Lottery.

The name “El Niño” was not officially awarded until 1966. The same date on which it began to be celebrated under the modern system, with the use of multiple drums. Thus, after termination and reinstatement prizes began to be awarded in 1946, the Children's Lottery Draw was finally configured.

This was celebrated during its first years and until 1999 every January 5. Since 2000 The date was changed to coincide with Three Kings Day in Spain. In this way, the name of the draw is linked to the delivery of gifts for the baby Jesus.

How does the Christmas and Children's Lottery draw work?

In both cases the operation of the draw and the distribution of prizes is quite similar. Each bill is subdivided into 2 strips of 5. These divisions are known as tenths and have a price of 20 euros.

In the Christmas Lottery there are a total of 170 series, since 2017, of 100.000 tickets each. It is taken in counts from the number 00000 to 99999. This implies a collection of 3400 billion euros. Of which 2380 billion are destined to be distributed in prizes.

On the day of the draw, every December 22, a total of 1807 balls are entered into the prize pot. On the other hand, 100.000 balls are placed in the numbers drum. The draw has a duration of approximately 4 hours. It ends when all 1807 balls have been drawn from the prize pot. In each round, two children from the Colegio de San Ildefonso extracts a ball from each drum. One says the number that goes from 00000 to 99999 and the other the prize. That way, you never know when the jackpot will hit.

In the case of the Children's Lottery, the operation is practically the same. There are two drums, the ones that hold the balls with the numbers and the prizes. From the first drum, a ball with a number ranging from 00000 to 99999 is drawn. Meanwhile, in the other drum, the ball with the prize is drawn. Each pairing is valid for the 50 series of numbers in the draw.

Main differences between the Christmas lottery and the Children's lottery

The Christmas and Children's Lotteries They have many similarities due to their tradition and what they represent annually.. Millions of Spanish families look forward to the draw every year. Broadly speaking, we can say that both share many characteristics. However, there are also some key differences to highlight.

Celebration date

Perhaps, the most obvious and as their names indicate. One takes place in December. While the other (The “El Niño”) will make you wait until next year. Just when Three Kings Day arrives and the Christmas party ends in most cultures.

Amount to distribute

In both lotteries, a total of 70% of the proceeds are allocated to be awarded as prizes to the participants. However, in the Lotería del Niño only 50 series of 100.000 tickets are sold. While, The Christmas Lottery reaches up to 170 series with the same number of bills. This means that the proceeds from the Lotería del Niño are significantly less than those collected at Christmas. The total emissions of the first is equivalent to 1000 million euros, while in the second it goes up to 3400 million.

Number of prizes to be distributed

The Christmas Lottery is the most generous draw in terms of prizes. Have a jackpot of 4 million euros. However, this is also because they only distribute a total of 14008 prizes for each series. On the other hand, the Extraordinary Draw of the Lotería del Niño distributes up to 37.812 prizes for each series.

How to participate in both draws?

To participate in the Christmas and Children's Lottery draw, you have to acquire numbers from one of the series. To do this, you can go to a physical establishment (lottery administrations) or buy your number online. The different ways in which you can acquire your numbers are:

Tenth: The tenth gets its name from being the tenth of a bill. Buying a tenth implies that, if your number is awarded, your profit is divided by 10. Thus, if you hit the Christmas jackpot (4 Million euros), you will only receive 400.000 euros. The tenth has a value of 20 euros

Ticket: The bill includes all the tenths of a number of a given series. Buying a ticket ensures you get the full prize if your number was awarded during the Drawing. The ticket has a retail value of 200 euros.

Series: One series covers all 100.000 banknotes and their corresponding million tenths. Buying the entire series ensures you win each of the thousands of prizes in said draw. However, it will not be enough to replace the 20 million euros that it would cost you.

Which one am I most likely to win?

The Christmas Raffle is the one that distributes the largest amount of money for each winning ticket. So, The jackpot amounts to 4 million euros for each winning ticket in the 170 series.. An amount that doubles the 2 million euros per ticket awarded with the jackpot in the child's draw. However, this smaller amount of prizes in the Three Kings' Day draw is due to lower risk.

During the Christmas Lottery draw, 14.008 prizes are distributed for every 100.000 tickets. This yields a 14% chance of winning a prize. In the Christmas Lottery, 9.999 refunds are given per series. This means that if you win a prize you will have a 71,38% chance that it will be a refund.

In the Children's Lottery, a total of 37.812 prizes are awarded for each series of 100.000 tickets. That gives you a 37,8% chance of getting some reward. As for refunds, the draw held on Three Kings Eve delivered 29.999 returns. That means that, if one of your numbers wins, you will have a 79,33% chance that it will be a payout.

Thus, it can be stated that In the Christmas Lottery you have greater opportunities to obtain juicy benefits if your ticket wins. Meanwhile, the Lotería del Niño assures you more possibilities of recovering your money and obtaining profits, although smaller.
