OCU denounces Netflix for unfair commercial practices

Netflix is without a doubt one of the most popular and used platforms today to watch movies, series and all types of audiovisual content. However, this also brings to the fore some controversies that have been marked in recent years, and the last one is that the OCU denounces Netflix for unfair commercial practices, since it considers that it is trying to induce its clients to contract a more expensive service thinking that it is the most economical that the company offers.

Netflix services and their rates

There are different platforms through which we can find a large number of cinematographic content, series, programs, documentaries and others.

One of the most popular is Netflix, which offers its customers a fairly complete collection with all kinds of genres to choose from.

This has led to many households deciding to pay for this service, with the particularity that there are different plans and prices that adapt to the needs of each one separately.

Currently, we can find four main plans which are the following:

  • Standard Plan with Ads: It has a price of €5,49 per month with the particularity that it includes ads. Some movies and series are limited, but it allows FullHD resolution and up to two devices.
  • Basic plan: its price is €7,99 per month, it allows a single device, HD resolution and access to all available movies, series and mobile games.
  • Standard Plan: It is priced at €12,99 per month, and we can add an additional user for an extra €5,99 per month, as long as it is someone who lives with us. Allows access to all content, two devices and FullHD resolution.
  • Premium Plan: It is priced at €17,99 per month and the possibility of adding up to two new users for €5,99 per month. Allows up to four devices, Ultra HD resolution, special audio and access to all content.

The OCU denounces Netflix for what it considers unfair commercial practices

All companies are obliged to adequately inform their prices, and Netflix complies with this within a section that is housed in the help section reserved for the domain, so that if one enters the main page, one will find a price that does not match the most economical option.

For the OCU, this is an unfair commercial practice since it considers that the objective is for users to think that this is the cheapest price that can be found to become part of the platform, so it has decided to denounce Netflix with the objective of stopping future subscribers from being deceived.

If we now enter the Netflix Spain main page, we can see that the standard plan with ads appears for €5,49 per month, but once we click to access and choose the rate that best suits our needs, We find that the platform offers us three plans: Standard with ads, Standard and Premium, but they omit the Basic plan, which is the cheapest after the Standard with ads, the latter presenting quite a few limitations.

If we click on “See all plans"then if the plan appears"Basic", what OCU considers it to be an attempt at deception since there is no reason why access to this plan should be hidden.

At the moment we are waiting to see what this whole matter turns out to be, so stay tuned as we will keep you informed about how the OCU complaint against Netflix in Consumer Affairs for unfair commercial practices evolves.
