Google Stadia will end its services in 2023

The cloud gaming service Google Stadia It will stop working on January 18, 2023, approximately three years after it was released to the public in November 2019. The company made this announcement this week, which it published on its official blog. It is important to keep in mind that the only Spanish-speaking country where this service is available is Spain, since it never reached Latin America.

All customers who have made purchases on Google Stadia, including games, controllers and other content, will receive a refund from the company, except for subscription fees. Payments are expected to be made in mid-January of the following year. There will be no option to return the devices, not even at the points of sale where they were purchased.

Phil Harrison, vice president and general manager of Google Stadia, has stated that the platform has not been as popular as anticipated and that, as a result, it will be closed. “Although Stadia's approach to video game streaming was based on a solid technological foundation, it did not gain the traction among users that we had anticipated, so we have made the decision to end our service,” he said.

According to another part of the statement, workers who contributed to the development of Google Stadia will be transferred to other divisions of the company. Harrison also mentions the possibility that the technology behind the service can be used in other projects, such as augmented reality, YouTube and Google Play.

“We will continue to invest in new tools, technologies and platforms that drive the success of developers, industry partners, creators and cloud users,” said the CEO of Google Stadia.
