Tempered glass screen protectors, yes or no?

The size of the screens of our smartphones and tablets is increasingly larger, especially those of phones, while the frames are increasingly thinner. This constitutes a danger for our terminals, because if we suffer a blow it is easier for us to be left with a broken screen. This is one of the reasons why some manufacturers have launched tempered glass protectors on the market, which in theory are more resistant than plastic protectors.

Now, are these protectors all advantages? No, although it is not all negative either. As with (almost) everything, there are pros and cons of this type of protective film.

In favor of tempered glass protectors

Advantages of tempered glass

Tempered glass protectors are more comfortable when using the terminal's touch screen, since the glass is softer to handle than plastic sheets.

They also sit better. When we are putting in a plastic protector and we make a mistake, we will most likely have to throw it away and put in a new one. In addition, there are usually always some small bubbles, no matter how careful we are when placing the sheet. If we make a mistake with the glass, we just have to lift it and put it in the right place without losing grip.

There are glass protectors that also have an additional anti-fingerprint sheet. This way we don't have the screen full of the usual marks that occur when we use it.

Looking at it this way, it seems easy to conclude that in the most practical sense, glass beats plastic. But not completely.

Against tempered glass

Tempered glass thickness

The glass screen protector is thicker than plastic films, typically about 30 microns (0,3 millimeters). Although it doesn't have to be a problem, the feeling of thickness of the phone can be somewhat bulkier, and a very tight case may not work when you put this protector on it.

Price is also another factor where glass loses out to plastic, for several reasons. The first thing is that it is difficult to find standard glass protectors, so each phone model has its specific protector, unlike plastic sheets, which can be bought in batches and used on several models with the same screen size. In addition, the plastic ones usually always come in various quantities, while the glass protector box only comes with one.

As you can see, there is also a point against deciding on a glass protector.

What decision to make?

Taking these details into account, when deciding the type of protection you are going to buy you must take all factors into account. Although if you finally decide on glass, it is best to look at a sheet that is not too cheap, especially because of the issue of fingerprints that I talked about before. Nobody likes to have their mobile screen full of fingers or marks, or having to clean it all the time when using it. Choose a film with fingerprint protection and a settled matter.

Don't think that because you use glass you don't need a good case. It is true that some tempered glass protectors also cover the back of your smartphone, but these are only useful to prevent scratches. If you drop your phone, the only thing that can prevent you from ending up with a designer paperweight is a good quality case. Although that is another topic that we could also talk about at length, because there are many covers, and not all of them protect what they should.
