How to change the default apps in Windows 10

When we install Windows 10, one of the first things we notice is that it arrives with different applications already pre-installed which will be used by default. However, things have changed a lot compared to previous operating systems, and it is clear that Microsoft does its best to get us to use these tools before other alternatives such as our favorite browser, a custom player, etc. In any case there is the possibility of change default apps in Windows 10, and although the process is simple, it is most likely that it will catch you new and you will not know how to carry it out.

How to change the default apps in Windows 10

What are the default applications in Windows 10

When we talk about default applications in Windows 10, what we are referring to are those applications that will open certain files or perform specific actions automatically.

For example, when browsing, by default the default Windows application is Microsoft Edge, that is, every time we open any Internet page, it will automatically be done through this program.

However, it is very possible that we prefer to use other personalized browsers such as Mozilla Firefox o Google Chrome, but unlike what we were used to, now it is no longer enough to simply install the program and indicate that we want it to be the default, but we have to carry out a small and quick configuration.

Steps to change default apps in Windows 10

In this sense we have two different options which we will detail below.

Through the context menu

One of the systems that is used to choose the default applications that open a specific file is through the context menu, which is the one that appears when we click the right mouse button.

Therefore, all we have to do is go to the file we want to open, right-click and then choose “Open with”.

From here we can indicate which is the default program with which we want to open this file from now on.

Through the configuration section

But there are some situations where this is not so viable, and one of them is browsers. That is, when we click on a link it does not ask us, but instead opens directly with the default browser.

In any case, what we will do is access the section Windows 10 settings for which we will click on the home key and then on “Settings”. In the new window we click on “System” and on the left you will see the “Default applications” section that you have to access.

Here you will see the different default application options that you can configure, for which you just have to click on the one you want to change and choose the one that best suits your tastes and needs.

Of course we can also reestablish the default applications that came by default with Windows 10, and in any case it is necessary to have installed the new applications that we want to use so that they can be available through this list.
